Maya's Current Affairs Round Up

Updated: Jun 6, 2023

Every few weeks, Maya will write about what she thinks are the most interesting stories from around the world... this week she tells us about bird flu, endangered wolf litters and ...

Avian Flu Hits Birds In the world

Avian Flu has started in Asia and has quickly spread to Europe. The disease has spread out by birds moving around (migrating). The flu has now spread to North America. Tens of millions of birds have been killed because of the flu. The same kind of flu started seven years ago (2015). The 2015 bird flu caused over 50 million bird

deaths in the U.K. The avian flu was first spotted in Saudi Arabia in 2020. Zoo workers are not allowed to wear their clothes uncovered. They have to where plastic covers to not spread the flu around.

Endangered wolf litter

On the 21st of April a wolf litter was found. Six red wolf pups were found in the wild which was great news for endangered red wolves. These pups were found in North Carolina. At this time only 16 to 17 adult red wolves live in the wild so six new red wolves are a very large deal. A long time ago red wolves lived throughout the U.S southeast but because of hunting the population has been reduced.

I really hope that more red wolves will be found.

Women of Afghanistan forced to wear turbans

On Saturday, the Taliban (who took control of Afghanistan) announced women can only wear a burqa. A burqa is a piece of clothing that covers women from head to toe leaving only a small opening for the eyes. The Taliban took over Afghanistan last August. The Taliban said they would not put strict rules on women like they did last time. Since then the government has changed their mind and made strict rules again. The Taliban sees that the men of the family are superior and have to take care of the women. Several countries are putting pressure on the Taliban to delete this rule.
